Here are some common misconceptions of Hong Kong. While most of the major ones are made by gwailos( ang mo people), there are still many yhings people get confused about this city in the southern province of China.
1.Hong Kong is an independent stateIn reality:Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region in China. It has full autonomy over internal affairs while China takes care of the Military. Hong Kong can never exist alone...imagine what a chaosit will be...2.Hong Kong is over-run by PLA soldiers In reality:
If you've been to Hong Kong, have you seen a single soldier in the street? Yea..you never see them..as a matter of fact, sightings of British soldiers in Hong Kong streets were more common back then than PLA soldiers today. As a matter of fact, Hong Kong is over-run by another type of army: Armies of protestors all over the city complaining about everything Big and Small. From Article 23 to wages raised too low a percent, from Anit-Tung to Use less plastic campaingn.
3.Traditional Hong Kong Buildings are all red in colour.
In reality:
You only see this scene in chinatown in California. Yes red is a nice colour. But red is not the only colour Chinese people use to paint their houses. Most of the time, the colour depends on the type of material used. Nowadays, the most popular colour is dirty grey, with sewage fragrance.
4.Hong Kong means Fragrant harbour. The harbour refers to Victoria Harbour.
In reality.
Yes. Victoria harbour is very "fragrant" cuz it smells of a nice poop and pee fragrance. But the "harbour' this name refers to is Aberdeen Harbour (equally fragrant..only this time is rotten fish). The name Hong Kong comes from a village which is located at the shores of Aberdeen Harbour, the original village is somewhere between Wong Chuk Hang and Aberdeen.
5.Sweet and Sour Pork is Hong Kong's favourite dish.
In reality:
Look at the menu of any high class Cantonese restaurant. You will never find this dish available. Though it is a popular household dish, most Hong Kong people prefer better tasting delicacies like Steamed Fish, Dim Sum and Eel.
6.Hong Kong People don't understand English.
In reality:
If that's the case, how on earth did the gwailos communicated with us? Our english standards are quite shitty but that does'nt mean we don't understand.
7.Jacky Chan is Hong Kong's favourite Celebrity.
In reality.
Yea..he's popular, but if you had listened to Chinese radio or read any chinese entertainment magazine, you should notice that Andy Lau's name appears more often. Anyway, Andy's voice is sooooo much better can...
8.Hong Kong girls are very sexy.
In reality.
Go Singapore or Malaysia to find you sexy "leng lui"(pretty girl). Even in the hottest summer months, you will NEVER see a girl wearing super short shorts, nor will you see anyone wear mini-skirts in the streets. And at the beach, 95% of the girls wear single piece swim-wear.(Which covers alot of their body) You seldom see the sexy two-piece types(More exposive) and a bikini is extremely rare, normally reserved for the super pretty Miss Hong Kong contestants to wear at photo-shoots. Even if a girl is pretty, she would rather conseal herself than show off her body, cuz it is often percieved that people who dress scantily are prostitutes. Anyway, why choose a wife for her sex appeal? The inside is more imporant. =)
9.Hong Kong practices censorship to a great extent.
In reality:
Turn on your Hong Kong TV Channels and you will discover a tsunami of criticisms of the Hong Kong government. as a matter of fact, in order to please the demand of the public, some newspapers actually create false scandals for people to criticize and let their hearts out in their continuous criticisms. Even the Government owned radio station RTHK is extremely anti-government. Most of its news programs are extremely critical of almost every single government policy regardless good or bad. The entertainment channels are worse. Almost every other star is severely scrutinized from their hair to shoes. That's why politicans actors and Singers in the territory are so consious of their appearance and words. Any wrong move or word would mean their downfall.
10.The crem-de-la-crem of all misperceptions: Dim Sum is spelt Tim Sum.
In reality:
WRONG!!! It is DIM SUM! Anyone who speaks decent chinese or cantonese would pronounce the pharase as Dian Xin(chinese), Deem Saam(cantonese). Where on earth do you find the bloody "T"??? So remember..It's DIM SUM! =)
