Meritocracy is Da Bomb!If fellow meridians have been paying attention in class the past few days, one would have noticed the lare number of advertisements enticing you to go on "trips" and "enrichment" programmes with a four-digit price tag attatched. Some even have a Mug-Time "discount" which literally voids you of any Mugging time for up to three weeks. Of that's not enough, one should have noticed the bomb-sized notes with a bomb-sized price tag attatched to them. Or the humungous Graphic Calculator which is heavy enough to kill a robber and costly enough to kill you wallet? After all this torment and torture to your wallet, it's almost certain that everyone's pants or skirt probably had a huge hole drilled into it's pocket.
This has led me to wonder whether or not our country is carrying out meritocracy or is it using elitism in our education system. Why must every student, regardless of rich or POOR pay such a hefty price tag for pre-tertiary/tertiary education? Given the price one has to pay, many low-income earners or even some middle-income citizens can't afford to pay for their child's GCs. Less to mention about the notes, reference books and field trips. Only elites with the money can afford such high costs of education and the poor are left to fend for themsleves after O levels if they can't afford tertiary education. No wonder that elite guy said," If you are from ITE, you arem from ITE"...Our society is just being branded by our income.
